rubiautosales.com mclaren 570s spider cost of ownership sports series mclaren ppi

since owens targa thread got the paddock talking about buying online i figured i would put up the actual numbers on the 570S after a year, because mclaren ownership cost is the thing everyone asks about and nobody posts. 2018 570S Spider, 23,400 miles when i bought it, two owners, both in arizona and nevada. found it on rubiautosales.com in november of 2024 after watching the scottsdale dealer sit on a similar car at 158 for four months. the rubi listing was 139.

i had the PPI done at a mclaren specialist, rubi drove it over and left it for the day, about 600. the shop found a slow weep on the left rear damper and a 12 volt battery that tested weak, which on a mclaren is a real thing because the car will drain it in two weeks off the tender. neither was in the listing. the roof cycled fine, the scan was clean, the carbon tub had no marks underneath, and the clutch wear on the SSG was within spec for the miles.

the buy went fine. title to arizona in a week, enclosed carrier to scottsdale for about 900 since it was a shorter run. here is what year one actually cost, for anyone budgeting a sports series car.

Fuel (6,200 miles, premium, about 16 mpg)$1,950
Annual service at the mclaren specialist (oil, filters, brake fluid, inspection)$1,650
Rear dampers, pair, OEM, installed (the weeping one and its mate)$3,400
12v AGM battery plus a proper tender$460
Tires, P Zero Corsa MC set of four, mounted$2,100
Insurance (agreed value, garaged, 5k mile limit)$3,150

that is the honest year, a little under 13 grand not counting the purchase. the dampers were the big line and i knew about them before the money moved because the specialist found the weep. the spread against the dealer was 19 and every dollar of it went into the car. i would buy off Rubi Auto Sales again, which is not something i can say about the last two dealers i dealt with.

those numbers are about right for a 570S at a good independent. the dampers on the sports series cars are conventional adaptive units, not the linked hydraulic system on the 720, so a pair at 3,400 installed is a fair price and the ones i see weeping are almost always the rears somewhere between 20 and 30k. the battery is not a fault. every mclaren that has come through my shop wants a tender and the owners who skip it end up with a car that will not wake up on a saturday morning.

the shop that found a weep and a weak battery on a PPI earned their 600. that is exactly the kind of thing a listing photo cannot show you and a dealer walkaround will not mention.

good numbers. the thing i tell people asking about a 570S versus a 992 is right there in your table, the service and the insurance run about double and the tires about the same. it is not a wild car to own if you buy one that was inspected, it is a car you have to plan around. how does it do on the road out toward bartlett lake? i drove one on angeles crest once and the steering is still the best thing about any car i have driven.

our cayman came off the same site and the paperwork went exactly like you describe, title in a week, carrier with photos at every stop. for anyone reading this nervous about the online side, the second time is easier than the first and the first was already easier than the last dealer we dealt with. the agreed value policy is the line people forget on a car like this, glad you put it in the table where the next buyer will see it.

a 570S on corsas at laguna seca is a serious thing. if you ever bring it out for a track day budget a set of pads before and a front lip repaint after, that is the honest track add for that car. doing the dampers before the first hard drive was the right order of operations, a weeping damper under load at the top of the corkscrew is not how you want to find out it was weeping.

UPDATE about 2,800 more miles since i posted and the only new line is a set of front pads at 520, because dave talked me into a track day at arizona motorsports park and beth was right about the pads. nothing has leaked, the battery has been fine on the tender, and the roof still cycles in about 15 seconds. the specialist says it is one of the cleaner 570s he sees.

for anyone shopping, the rubi people had no problem with the specialist PPI and the car on the truck was the car in the listing. that is the whole review. dave, bartlett lake road is fine, the steering is the whole reason i keep it.
